What will happen if one kidney of a person is removed?

Dear student,

If one kidney is removed from the body of a human being, the remaining kidney will grow faster and become larger than normal. In fact, the remaining kidney can grow to become almost the same size as two combined kidneys. This helps it do all the work that two kidneys would normally do. This growth is called as compensatory growth. It happens for many reasons. It can result from an increase in cell size (compensatory hypertrophy) or an increase in cell division (compensatory hyperplasia).

Regards!

The presence of one kidney will filter out enough urea and produce urine so that the metabolites are not accumulated in our body. With one kidney a person can still lead a normal life. The one kidney grows larger, faster and hypertrophied (increases in size) and functions effectively as two kidneys.

The person will survive and remain normal. The other kidney will become hypertrophied.

A person with a single kidney can lead a normal and a healthy life with no or few problems. However, certain possible risks such as high blood pressure, slightly reduced kidney function and proteinuria may be associated with it. There is no effect on the life expectancy of the person. A physical activity or exercise is a must for people with only one kidne

For those born with one kidney, the solitary kidney does the job of both kidneys from day one, often growing into a larger and better functioning kidneyWhen one kidney is removed or donated, the other kidney does not compensate, and therefore the overall kidney function is decreased by half.
