Dear Student, your friend is right. The energy flow will decrease with each level of the trophic. Energy flow is not dependent on the rate of reproduction. Even if the rate of reproduction is low or high the energy will decrease on next trophic level.

The rate of reproduction in phytoplankton can be reduced either by lack of nutrients or by extremely high or low temperature.

Pyramid of energy is always upright, can never be inverted, bcause when energy flows from a particular trophic level  to the next energy level, some energy is always lost as heat at each step.
