which one of the following has higher coagulating value?give reason. sulphate ion phosphate ion

Dear student

Coagulation is defined as the reduction of charge on the molecule or ion under study by some oppositely charged ions. The coagulation power is defined as the concentration of the oppositely charged ion required to neutralise or reduce the charge on the given molecule. Now since we need to coagulate some positively charged ion, that is why we are adding the negative ions to the solution. Since out of sulphate and phosphate, phosphate has 3- charge but sulphate just has 2- charge. So phosphate has more tendency to bring about the coagulation and thus its coagulating value will be high.

Coagulation value -The minimum concentration of an electrolyte in mili-moles per litre required to cause precipitation of a solution in two hours is called coagulating value.

Since, greater the valency of coagulating ion, greater is its value, thus PO43- > SO42-
