for this i wrote,
social problems because they displace local people
economic problems because they submerge large lands
it releases a lot of methane
is my third point correct ??? if it is wrong then how many marks will they reduce
(science board paper 2018, set 1, Q15)

Dear Student,

Your third point is correct.
While building dams, when a large area is flooded with water to make a reservoir, a large number of plants also gets submerged. This causes production of methane. When a dam is built on a river, the river water is blocked and accumulate behind the dam. This creates a stagnant lake. The excess water flooded into the nearby plants due to which plants wilt and die. These dead plants are then decomposed by bacteria. This leads to the generation of large amounts of methane and carbon dioxide.
