Why aquatic organisms produce a large number of sperms and eggs?

Because there is very less chances of them hatching as they are either eaten or damaged by fishes. Only a few eggs hatch. May be 5 out of 20 at a time.

Because out many eggs some eggs will only get fertillised and other would be eaten by fishes and other organisms

because they are formed by external fertilisation
