why did doris pearson cry ??

Doris Pearson burst into tears because her mother had questioned her taste in men considering the fact that she was going out with Charlie Spence. The latter was in her mother's opinion not worth Doris, she wanted her to find someone better because Mrs Pearson herself would not be seen dead with Charlie Spence who was buck-toothed and half-witted. Mrs Pearson also says that had she been at her daughter's age, she would have found someone better or given herself up as a hopeless case. This brought Doris to tears and she ran out of the room.

She didnt believe what her (apparent) mother had said and was shocked by the attitude of her.
