Why did the Narrator have doubts about the address?

When the author went to the address her mother had given to her years ago, the woman who opened the door showed no signs of recognition even when she Introduced herself as Mrs S’s daughter. The woman opened the door only a chink and was partially hidden behind it. This made the narrator doubt whether she had come to the right address or not
