Why did the narrator,Mrs.S daughter make a special trip to Marconi Street ?

Did she achieve her purpose ?

The narrator first learned of Mrs Dorling's existence during the first half of the War. She had come home for a few days and it struck her immediately that something had changed in the rooms, various things were missing. Her mother was surprised that she had noticed so quickly. That was when the narrator's mother told her about Mrs Dorling. The narrator had never heard of this woman but she had apparently been an old acquaintance of her mother's whom she had not seen for years. Then suddenly she had turned up at her mother's doorstep and renewed their contact. Since then she had been a regular visitor. This is what led to the narrator visiting the place twice, she was still to absorbed in the past to move on. The narrator comments that forgetting the address would be the easiest part but the memories of their past and the belongings which were markers of their past would remain indelible in her memory. She did not want to remember the place, she could not go back to this place because the objects that were linked with the familiar life of former times had lost their value for her. They had been severed from the associations that she had with them in an unfamiliar location. Also, they would not have found a place in her small apartment. To forget the things of her past would require a momentous effort due to the associations that these things held for her but she would have to do it. In this process forgetting the address would be the effortless part.
