Why do all living organisms need to respire?

When we respire, energy is produced.

Living organisms need energy to move, excrete, grow, reproduce and maintain themselves.

In all living cells, including animals and plants, food molecules are broken down by a reaction called oxidation.
Oxidation : Breaking down of food molecules ;a chemical reaction in which a molecule gains oxygen or loses hydrogen.
