Why do testes in mammals descend into scrotum

Scrotum lies outside the abdominal cavity. So, the temperature in scrotum is 2-3 degree less than the body temperature. And this temperature is required for the testis to produce sperms. So, that is why the testis descends into the scrotum.

Sperms can only be produced  when testis is descended in the scrotum.
