There are various reasons for shedding of leaves by trees:
  • Those trees which shed their leaves specifically in winter seasons (or in late autumn) are called deciduous trees. They are mostly found in temperate regions. The winters are very cold and dry in such areas. So, to prevent chances of excessive loss of water through the process of transpiration in leaves and the whole trees from getting dry up in dry winter., the plants prepare themselves in advance by shedding the leaves.
  • Moreover, in such dark winter seasons when enough light is not available for leaves to photosynthesise and prepare enough food, the trees enter in dormant stage by shedding their leaves.
Thus, trees which shed their leaves in winter season do so to retain moisture and energy.

The other reason for shedding the leaves is that plants also get rid of waste material that gets accumulated in leaves. The older leaves which get damaged with the passage of time by various infestations and other reasons usually get shed on getting dead.

If leaves are not shed off, the plant will not be able to get rid of the accumulated waste. This will lead to a build-up of waste in plants.
