Why do water pipes usually crack in winter ?

Solution:

During winters the water pipes contract due to such a less temperature while the water inside the pipe continues to expand as it has the property of expanding at lower temperature like below 4^°C. Thus, the freezing water exerts pressure on the pipe from inside and hence the cracks in water pipes are observed.
