Why do we calculate Gross Cropped Area over Net Sown Area?

Gross cropped area is the total area sown once or more than once during a year. Thus, if the same plot of land is sown twice in a year, it it counted twice in gross cropped area. On the other hand, net sown area is the area sown but is counted only once.

Gross cropped area provides a better estimate of the total land area under cultivation. This is because if a plot of land is sown twice and, therefore,  yields two crops, it should be counted twice.
