why do we need rights in a democracy?

It is the other way round. For our rights, we need democracy. Because democracy will give the atmosphere for the full exercise of our rights.

 deocracy itself revolves around the word "RIGHTS". If there's no rights , it cant be called as a democracy.rights are needed for an individual to contribute to society and live a life of a true citizen. these rights will help to protect the freedom of the citizen even if the government or the governing leaders keep changing.
