why do we need to draw arcs from 2 points before making perpendicular line

Suppose we are drawing the perpendicular bisector of line segment AB.

While drawing its perpendicular bisector, we make two arcs from points A and B.

We have to cut two arcs from points A and B because we are drawing the perpendicular bisector of the whole line segment AB.
