WHY DOES THE FOREST FLOOR SEEM SPONGY?

The forest floor seems spongy due to the present of a brown coloured substance called humus Humus is brown or black organic matter consisting of partially or wholly decayed plant and animal material in the top layer of soil like fallen leaves, dead plants and animals buried in the soil etc. It provides nutrients to the plants and increases the ability of soil to retain water.
