Why is DNA twisted?

DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) is a genetic material found in the chromosomes, which are present in the nucleus of a cell. It is a chemical, which carries genetic information required by the cells to divide and produce proteins.

DNA is made up of?genes. A set of genes are responsible for the production of a specific protein. Each protein is specific for its specific function. Therefore, it is the DNA that decides the formation of the structural, enzymatic, hormonal, and other components in an organism. Genes are responsible for the physical appearance and body functions of an organism.

Therefore, it is the DNA that gets transferred from the parents to the offsprings and makes them look similar to their parents.

The DNA, is made up of three major molecules.

Bases,Phosphates,Sugar

Out of these three molecules, sugar and phosphate are water soluble. They're?hydrophilic, as we call it;?hydro?meaning water and?philic?meaning loving.

But the bases, they don't love water so much. They're insoluble on water. You're probably wondering,??wait.. what's that got to do with the DNA? And why are we talking about water??

The cell, inside which DNA resides, is filled with water for most part. So, in order to stay away from the water molecules, the bases align themselves in such a way that they stay away from water. But wait, what the cell has water on all sides. So the bases try to pair up. Still not done. Only two sides are covered. They didn't expect the cell to be three dimensional. They're not afraid. They're prepared. They just twist themselves so that, the twist just forms like a staircase and covers the bases on all sides.

The DNA molecule is twisted because structurally it makes the molecule stronger and more stable. Not only is it twisted but it is also folded by many times over into very complex shapes. All this shape twisting and folding compacts the molecule.Just think of a tinker toy object it will fall apart readily when you handle it .If you build a model that is more compacted it is more stable and won't fall apart on you so easily. Hope its usefull
