Why is hydrogen placed in group 1 and period 1 in the modern period table near the metal ?

Hydrogen has both metallic and nonmetallic characteristics. Though said nonmetal it can also fall under metal . It also has positve charge which indicates metal and also in fewer cases have negative charge which indicates nonmetal. H+ and H-

Hydrogen is the only electro-positive non metal and it has valency of 1.formula of hydrogen when reacts with oxygen is water this is the one of the main reason for placing the hydrogen in group i.Group 1 because it has only one 1 shell,Period 1 because it has one electron on its last shell.
