Why is Pluto called a dwarf planet ?

Dear Student,

The International Astronomical Union decided in 2006 that Pluto should be described as dwarf planet which is more developed than asteroids, but different than the known planet.

Pluto, Eris and the asteroid Ceres became the first dwarf planets. Unlike planets, dwarf planets lack the gravitational muscle to sweep up or scatter objects near their orbits. They end up orbiting the sun in zones of similar objects such as the asteroid and Kuiper belts.

  • It needs to be in orbit around the Sun – Yes, so maybe Pluto is a planet.
  • It needs to have enough gravity to pull itself into a spherical shape – Pluto…yes
  • It needs to have “cleared the neighborhood” of its orbit – Uh oh. Here’s the rule breaker. According to this, Pluto is not a planet
  • another reason why it is not a drwft planet as pluto is very small in size n there are 70000 such things in solar system which are of plutos size ....if pluto whold have been a planet we would have to consides those 70000 also as a planet

hope i could answer your query....thumps up plzz...~~
