Why "metabolic state of root" does not affect apoplast pathway and why it affect the symplast pathway.

Dear Student.
Please find below the solution to the asked query.

The apoplast pathway involves the movement of water through the adjacent cell walls of the epidermis and cortex without entering the cytoplasm. Apoplast is a system of adjacent cell walls that are continuous, except at the casparian strips of the endodermis. The movement of water is restricted at the casparian strips of the root endodermis. Thus, due to presence of casparian strips water does not move by apoplast in endodermis.

As apoplast is a non living pathway, where substance are moved through cell wall and cortex, metabolic state (only involves living component) does not affect apoplast pathway. The reverse is for symplast pathway as it allows movement through protoplast connected to plasmodesmata.
