Why plants take oxygen in the night?why not Cardondioxide?

Plants take oxygen during night but not carbon-dioxide due to respiration. During day in presence of sunlight oxygen is produced during photosynthesis and carbon-dioxide is taken in. But during night as there is no sunlight, respiration occurs to obtain energy from the food prepared. So plants utilise oxygen for respiration and produces carbon-dioxide.
