Why the king wanted to postpone the consideration of finer points like guilt .

The king is a perfect example of a "puppet king". He was not a leader, rather a person who agreed with everything that his advisers and his citizens had to say. Though their thoughts and ideas were irrational, he thought he was being a good king by following their every word. The citizens did not care about who was guilty and who was innocent, they just wanted to see someone hang. The king blindly followed, putting aside the need to search for the true guilty party, and pandered to the needs of the people.
