why would it be futile to attempt to detect sounds from other planets, even given the very best in audio detectors?

This is because there is vacuum between different celestial bodies... ie thereis no medium like air, water etc. Since sound waves require a medium to propagate, they can't travel throgh vacuum and hence all such attempts would be futile.
