A displacement reaction occurs when an iron nail is dipped in copper sulfate solution because iron lies above the copper in the reactivity series and thus displaces copper from copper sulfate solution. The reaction is as follows:
Fe+CuSO4------->FeSO4+Cu
The two observations are as follows:
1)The color of the copper sulfate solution changes from blue to light green because of the formation of FeSO4 which is light green in color.
2)There is a brown deposition of copper on iron nail due to the displacement of copper from copper sulfate solution.
