Write a short note on Acid rain.

Dear Student,

Acid rain is caused when the oxides of nitrogen and sulphur are precipitated from the rain water. These oxides are present in the upper atmosphere and when rain falls these oxides get dissolved in rain water and forms nitric acid and sulfuric acid thus makes it acidic.Acid rain usually has a pH of less than 5.6.

Acid rain falls on buildings, cars, and trees and can make lakes acidic.Effect of acid rain on ecosystem is as follow:

1. Damage to animals : Most of the aquatic animals die off due to rising acidity levels in water bodies due to acid rain.

2. Material damage: It causes damage to many objects including building, historical monuments, statues and cars. The chemicals found in acid rain can cause paint to peel and stone statues to begin to look old which reduces their value and beauty. For example, the monument Taj Mahal is being slowly eaten away and the marble is getting discolored and lusterless due to acid rain effect.

3. Damage to plants and trees: Acidic water is dangerous to plants. Acid rain that seeps into ground can dissolve plants and trees nutrients that need trees and plants to be healthy which hurts their ability to survive. As a result, agricultural productivity and vegetation are also decreased.

In all over globe acid rain is heavily there in :
1. eastern Europe from Poland northward into Scandinavia,
2. the eastern third of the United States,
3. southeastern Canada
4. the southeastern coast of China and Taiwa

Hope this information clears your doubt.
Regards,
Priya Agrawal.

Acid rain?is caused by a chemical reaction that begins when compounds like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are released into the air. These substances can rise very high into the atmosphere, where they mix and react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form more acidic pollutants, known as?acid rain.
