The narrator continues to roam around the winding roads even when the doors of houses are closed in the blistering heat of noon. An old, rich man comes out of his house, thinks and offers to give him a job against his bag of gold. He carefully counts his coins, but this bargain too does not appeal to the narrator.
Evening sets in as the narrator passes by a blooming hedge. A beautiful lady offers to hire him with her smile. But, the author sees the transient happiness turn into tears and sorrow. She goes back alone, having failed to impress the narrator.
As he walks by the seaside, the narrator sees the sun shining on the sand and the waves breaking haphazardly on the shore. He comes across a child playing with shells. The child seems to recognize him and offers to hire him with nothing more than goodwill and cheer. He has nothing to give him in material terms. The narrator accepts the agreement that makes him feel free and content.
