Tribals constitute 8.6% of India's population or 104 million according to the 2011 census. They are some of the earliest inhabitants of India. There is a significant tribal presence in the Himalayan belt from Jammu and Kashmir in the west to the North Eastern states in the east. In the northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Nagaland, more than 90% of the population is tribal. In the other northeastern states of Assam, Tripura, Manipur and Sikkim, tribals constitute 20-30% of the population.
