Tribals constitute 8.6% of India's population or 104 million according to the 2011 census. They are some of the earliest inhabitants of India. There is a significant tribal presence in the Himalayan belt from Jammu and Kashmir in the west to the North Eastern states in the east. In the northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Nagaland, more than 90% of the population is tribal. In the other northeastern states of Assam, Tripura, Manipur and Sikkim, tribals constitute 20-30% of the population. Jharkhand, Orissa, West Bengal and Central India also have significant tribal populations. Smaller number of tribal people are found in the Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Gujarat and Rajasthan.

Some of the important tribal groups are the Nagas, the Khasis, the Bhils, the Gonds and the Santhals. Tribal groups generaly live in the fringes of modern society. Many of them still continue to practice their traditional culture and means of livelihood. However, tribal culture and economy are coming under pressure due to the destruction of forests, which have constituted the traditional habitat of tribal groups. Tribal habitats are coming under threat due to the spread of agriculture and mining into these regions.

Tribal Group is an education support services company with headquarters in Bristol in the United Kingdom. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE Fledgling Index.[2]

Tribal is a leading provider of technology products and services to the education, learning and training markets, they are based in the UK, and operate internationally, particularly in Australia, New Zealand and the US.

In 2010, Tribal commenced a disposal programme which saw them dispose of their Support Services division. The Tribal Resourcing business was sold in March 2011 and in April 2011, Tribal completed the sale of its Health and Government businesses to Capita Group.

This programme allowed Tribal to simplify their organisational structure and move away from areas which created risk to future financial stability. As a result, their cost base was significantly reduced and they redeveloped their former Education division into Technology and Services divisions.[3]

In March 2009 Tribal was awarded the contract to conduct Ofsted inspections of schools in the South of England, making it the largest of the three Regional Inspection Service Providers.[4] Other large contracts have been with theNational Health Service and the Prison Service.
