Rocks and minerals

  • Rock is a hard substance formed by consolidation of one or more inorganic minerals. There are mainly three types of rocks, igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks, and metamorphic rocks.

  • The cooling and solidification of extremely hot and molten rocks known as magma (also known as lava) leads to formation of igneous rocks.

  • Igneous rocks can be of two types - intrusive and extrusive.

  • Basalt is an example of extrusive rock whereas granite is an example of intrusive rock.

  • Sedimentary rocks are the rocks that are formed by the deposition of particles (sediments) on the already existing particles and rocks.
