A Chimpanzee holds objects with hand and an elephant with its proboscis (trunk). Are these organs homologous or analogous? Give reason for your answer. While creation and presence of variation is directionless, natural selection is directional as it is in the context of adaptation. Comment.

Solution:

Chimpanzee's hand and elephant's trunk (proboscis) are analogous organs . The two perform the same function but have different structure and embryonic origin.

Variation occurs randomly and can occur in any cell of the organism. The phenomenon it occurs is known as mutation and variation occurs spontaneously. This makes it directionless.

Natural selection is the selection of the organisms which have an advantage of the variation which is not shown by the other organisms. It removes the variation which is not suitable to the environment hence making it directional.
