A square of 5m length and 75cm width is to bordered with lace 6cm wide. Find the cost of putting the border at the rate of Rs.0.50 per sq. cm.

Length of rectangle ABCD = 5m = 500 cm

Breadth of rectangle ABCD = 75 cm

∴ Area of rectangle ABCD = (500 × 75) cm²

6 m wide lace is bordered all around the rectangle ABCD.

Now, PS = AD + 6 cm + 6 cm = (75 + 6 + 6) cm = 87 cm

PQ = AB + 6 cm + 6 cm = (500 + 6 + 6) cm = 512 cm

∴ Area of rectangle PQRS = (87 × 512) cm²

Area of bordered lace = Area of rectangle PQRS – Area of rectangle ABCD

                                   = (87 × 512) cm² – (500 × 75) cm²

                                   = 44544 – 37500

                                   = 7044 cm²

Cost of 1 cm² border = Rs 0.50

∴ Cost of 7044 cm² border = Rs 0.50 × 7044 = Rs 3522
