Solution
The element 'A' is iron in form of black coloured fillings and 'B' is sulphur, a yellow coloured solid.
When 'X' part was heated, it led to the formation of the compound FeS.
When dilute sulphuric acid was added to it, H2S gas was evolved. It is a colourless gas and can be identified by the smell of rotten eggs.
FeS + dil. H2SO4 → FeSO4 + H2S↑
Since part 'Y' was not heated, no compound was formed and a mixture of iron fillings and sulphur was obtained. When dilute sulphuric acid was added to it, H2 gas was evolved. This is because metals evolve hydrogen gas on reaction with acids and iron is a metal present in its original form in the mixture. It is a colourless and odourless gas. When a burning candle is brought near the gas, it burns with a pop sound because H2 gas is combustible.
Fe + dil. H2SO4 → FeSO4 + H2
