A crest is the point on a wave where there is maximum displacement within a cycle. A trough is the lowest point in a wave cycle. When the crests and troughs of two waves of equal amplitude and frequency intersect, the magnitude of the wave doubles. When they are out of phase, the resulting magnitude is zero.
