Cross cutting social division is when one kind of social division cross cuts another. In such cases it is difficult to pit one group against another.
Groups which may share a common interest on one issue may be on opposing sides on some other issue.Such differences are easy to accommodate and may not lead to deep social divisions.

eg.In Netherlands class and religion cross cut each. other Protestants and Catholics are different in the aspect that they belong to different sects of Christianity however they are equally likely to be rich or poor and maybe on the same side/opposing sides on a particular issue.
