Explain periodisation with the help of James mills classification

Dear Student,

James Mill was a Scottish economist and political philosopher. In 1817, he he divided Indian history into three periods – Hindu, Muslim and British. This periodisation was based on the religion of the most important rulers of India at various time. It has been criticised by modern historians because they feel it is wrong to periodise Indian history on the basis of the religion of rulers. For example, in ancient India, which Mill classified as the Hindu period, people of other religions like Buddhism and Janinism co-existed peacefully. In mediaeval times also, which Mill periodised as Muslim, people of different religions like Hinduism, Islam and Sikhism lived together. Mill's periodisation ignores this diversity of religions in India.
