For diluting an acid, the acid should be poured carefully in water and not the reverse . Why ?

Acid should be poured in water because exothermic reaction takes place i.e. large no. of heat is released. It can exceed on our body if reversed. It can harm so acid is added in water to make it dilute.

Hope it helps..!!!

The process of dissolving an acid in water is an exothermic process (i.e,heat will be released )..If water is added directly to the concentrated acid ,then the heat generated may cause burning ..Hence acids should always be added to water slowly with constant stirring ....
