Why do you think we have four varieties of coal when they are formed from the same dead organic matter? Draw a bar graph to represent the percentage of carbon content in coal.

Temperature and pressure are two important factors which decide the variety of coal which can be formed after degradation of dead organic matter.
The four types of coal are:
1. Anthracite: These are the best quality coal available. They are hard and brittle and have the highest carbon content of 86 - 97%.
2. Bituminous: They have a high heating value and are thus, used as fuel. It has a carbon content within 34 - 86%.
3. Sub-butiminous: They are relatively softer than anthacite and butiminous. They are black and dull. It has a carbon content within 35 - 45%.
4. Lignite: It has a lowest energy content. It is soft and dull. It has a carbon content within 25 - 30%.
