How do political parties shape public opinion ? Explain with three examples.

  • Political parties highlight issues and present reforms for the society.
  • Political parties have many activitists present all over the country who take up the issues highlighted by political parties and make public interested about these.
  • The pressure groups which have a major role in public opinion have a lot to do the political parties. they often act as extended arms of political parties.

For example the issues highlighted by political parties are a topic we are most concerned about. moreover when these issues are taken up the activists we start knowing about them and awareness spreads from one place to the other. The pressure groups who are more than often extended arms of political parties take up these issues oraganise information campaigns spread awareness and shape public opinion.

In a democracy, political parties often mobilise public opinion around important social, political and economic issues. It is required of parties to absorb the dominant public opinion, articulate it and then reflect it in their policies and political actions. Hence, in this sense, political parties both get shaped by and themselves shape public opinion. Many pressure groups like trade unions, merchant's groups, corporate lobbies ally themselves with certain political parties or often themselves stem from political parties. These groups, though independent in spirit, may toe the political line of their parent party. An example of this is the various research institutions and 'think-tanks' floated by corporate houses in India. These corporate groups often propagate the political views and economic aspirations of the political party that supports them while in government.
