If it is a metal, then the no. Of valence electrons is its group no. If its a non metal, then 10 +no. Of valence electrons. Eg. Nitrogen its electronic configuration is 2,5 it is a non metal so its group no. Is 10+5=15 th group. Hope it helped you:)
