The grandmother was very fond of the narrator. However, as the narrator became older, their bond of friendship was broken. The narrator became distant from her grandmother. His grandmother became lonely. She filled the resultant vacuum by chanting prayers, praying God, feeding sparrows,etc. Instead of making the narrator realise that she missed him, she passively accepted her situation.
