The theme of the play 'The Proposal' is the cultural practice of the nineteenth-century Russia whereby economic stability was more important than romance and relationships. Lomov's motivation to marry Natalia was far from romantic, it was a practical decision to be made because possession of land and expansion of his assets were the crucial things on his mind.
