Ozone (O3) is a molecule formed by 3 atoms of oxygen . Unlike oxygen which is required for respiration by aerobic organisms , ozone is a deadly poison . However at higher levels of the atmosphere , ozone performs an essential function. Like other environmental problems , ozone layer depletion also has become a major issue for all nations on the earth . a) How is ozone formed in the nature ? b) how can you spread awareness about the importance of ozone layer in our life ? c) what values can you inculcate in the public ? ONLY EXPERTS PLEASE ANSWER ...

Dear Student,

Yes, you are right. I want to add these points. Please find the qurey to your solution below:

Ozone is a  trioxygen molecule  chemically expressed as O 3 .
Ozone exist as gas which is generally present in the stratosphere layer of atmosphere. Ozone is very important gas as it absorbs ultra violet radiation of sun and hence protect living beings from the adverse effect of U.V radiation.  Along with this it also harmful to us, as troposphere is closer to the earth’s surface the ozone present in troposphere is harmful for public health.  It is considered as air pollution. The ozone in troposphere can destroy crops, trees and vegetation. It is harmful to breathe and causes respiratory problems. Long term exposure may cause bronchitis, asthma, heart diseases and cancer.

a) Ozone is formed when intensive ultra-violet radiation from the sun breaks down O2 molecules into two oxygen atoms.  These highly reactive oxygen atoms then react with more O2 molecules to form O3(ozone).

b)

The ozone layer is a layer rich in ozone gas present in the earth's atmosphere. It lies between 10-40 km in the stratosphere layer of atmosphere. The atmosphere is very thin at polar regions as compared to equatorial regions. Thus the thickness of ozone layer is not uniform everywhere and varies from region to region. This layer absorbs most of the harmful UV radiation from the sun, thus protecting people on the earth. These UV radiations can cause skin cancer, genetic mutations and other harmful ailments. They also have harmful effect on vegetation. So the ozone layers acts as a protective cover for the earth. However, over the last few years, the ozone layer has depleted in may regions resulting in the formation of ozone holes. The use of chloroflorocarbons in aerosols and refrigerators, and their subsequent escape into the atmosphere, is blamed for making holes in the ozone layer over Antarctica and Arctic. This has resulted in harmful consequences, for plants, animals and human beings.

c) They must be made aware of the sustainable development and how to reduce the usage of CFCs etc. By conducting classes in schools regarding different environmental issues so that the children pass on the information to others.

Hope this information will clear your doubts about the topic.
