A haloform (CHX3) where X can be halogen, is produced by halogenation of a substituted ketone (usually methyl ketone, RCOCH3) or alcohol (CH3CH(OH)R) in the presence of alkaline medium or a base. Such a reaction is called haloform reaction.
Haloform formed is a precipitate.

RCOCH3 + NaOH/I2 → RCOONa + CHX3

Compounds which give haloform reaction must have the following groups: CH3CO- and CH3CH(OH)-.
