Mahatma Gandhi had always maintained that the real growth of India lies in the growth of villages. As, 2/3 population of India is nowadays depends on agriculture and around 1/3 of the rural population lives in poverty. Rural areas support the bulk of India's population. Simultaneously, these areas are the breeding ground of poverty, hunger and starvation. So, to accelerate the process of growth and development of a country, rural development must be accorded priority.
Rural Development refers to the actions and initiatives taken for the social and economic development of the rural or backward areas.

Rural development is important not only for the majority of the population residing in a rural area but the growth of rural activities is necessary to stimulate the speed of overall economic expansion of the nation. It is pretended to be noticeable importance in the country today than in the olden days in the process of the evolution of the nation. It is a strategy trying to obtain improved rural creation and productivity, higher socio-economic equality, and ambition, stability in social and economic development.
Therefore, Rural Economic Development is essential for Indian economic development.
