Shiju collected his saliva and mixed it with liquid A in the test tube. In another test tube he took only liquid A. After 10 minutes, he added a few drops of iodine solution in the mixture in the first test tube. It did not show any colour but when he treated the other test tube with iodine, a blue black colour appeared. What is the aim of this activity? What is liquid A? Why did the first test tube not show any colour change with iodine while the second one did?
liquid A contains starch solution. The aim of this activity is to verify that the starch is digested by saliva. The first test tube dosent shows any change in colour because it contains saliva and starch and the starch is dissolved completely in the saliva. We know that iodine when reacts with starch, the solution turns blue-black in colour so there is no starch left in test tube A and hence there is no change in colour. Unlikely in the test tube B there is no saliva and only starch-iodine solution is present in it so there is no change in colour in second test tube.
