The iron gate of a building is 3m broad. It cn be opened by applying a force of 100N at the middle of the gate. Calculate the least force required to open this gate. Where should the force be applied?

Torque= Force times Distance

Torque required is same in both cases to open the door.
More the distance from the hinge lesser the force and the maximum distance possible is 3m.

Equating torques
100timesfrac{3}{2}=Ftimes 3
F= 50 N applied at end of  the door. (Ans)
