Humus refers to any organic matter that reached a point of stability where it will not break down further. It might be remain as such if the conditions does not change .

It is used to retain the soil moisture and encourage the formation of the good soil structure.​

The process of formation of humus from organic matters is known as humification. It occurs naturally within the soil by the action of decomposers like earthworm, microorganisms etc. on the dead and decaying parts of plants and animals. It helps soil to increase fertility and retain moisture.

Humus is the organic component of soil, formed by the decomposition of leaves and other plant material by soil microorganisms.Humus formed when organic material (such as leaves, dead animals etc.) is degraded by a combination of fungi, bacteria , microbes and other animals (earthworms for example) that reside in the soil.
