Humus refers to any organic matter that reached a point of stability where it will not break down further. It might be remain as such if the conditions does not change .

It is used to retain the soil moisture and encourage the formation of the good soil structure.​

The process of formation of humus from organic matters is known as humification. It occurs naturally within the soil by the action of decomposers like earthworm, microorganisms etc. on the dead and decaying parts of plants and animals. It helps soil to increase fertility and retain moisture.
