Greek(Modern Greek:ελληνικÎ[eliniËka]"Greek" andελληνικÎ γλÏσσα[eliniËci ËÉ£losa](listen)"Greek language") is an independent branch of theIndo-Europeanfamily of languages. Native to the southernBalkans, westernAsia Minor,Greece, and theAegean Islands, it has the longest documented history of any Indo-European language, spanning 34 centuries of written records. Its writing system has been theGreek alphabetfor the majority of its history; other systems, such asLinear Band theCypriot syllabary, were previously used. The alphabet arose from thePhoenician scriptand was in turn the basis of theLatin,Cyrillic,Coptic, and many other writing systems.
The Greek language holds an important place in the histories ofEurope, the more loosely definedWestern world, and Christianity; the canon ofancient Greek literatureincludes works of monumental importance and influence for the futureWestern canonsuch as the epic poemsIliadandOdyssey. Greek was also the language in which many of the foundational texts ofWestern philosophy, such as thePlatonic dialoguesand the works ofAristotle, were composed; theNew Testamentof the Christian Bible was written inKoiné Greek. Together with theLatintexts and traditions of theRoman world, the study of the Greek texts and society of antiquity constitutes the discipline ofclassics.
Greek was a widely spokenlingua francain the Mediterranean world and beyond duringclassical antiquityand would eventually become the official parlance of theByzantine Empire. In itsmodern form, it is the official language of Greece andCyprusand one of the 23official languages of the European Union. The language is spoken by at least 13 million people today in Greece, Cyprus, anddiaspora communitiesin numerous parts of the world.
Greekrootsare often used to coin new words for other languages; Greek andLatinare the predominant sources ofinternational scientific vocabulary.
