what is the use of anaerobic bacteria in the process of purification of water

When waste water undergoes the process of clarification in a large tank, solid wastes like faeces settle at the bottom and removed, while remaining waste material collected is known as sludge. Anaeobic bacteria decompose this sludge and  produce biogas which can be used for the generation of electricity.
