what was doris reaction on her mothrs indifferent behaviour

Doris Pearson's first reaction upon seeing her mother smoking and laying out cards on the table, was to be astounded. She was shocked to see her mother engaging in such activities and asked her what she was up to. Her mother's behaviour caught her by surprise, her mother had suddenly refused to comply with her order of having the yellow silk ironed. The moment Doris had entered the room, the first thing she did was order her mother. But her mother's refusal to comply finally caught her attention. She was also surprised to see her mother smoking because the woman had never done so before and Doris had never bothered to find out if her mother had at all been interested in having a smoke. Doris' relationship with her mother was based upon the functions that the latter performed for her, she felt no need to look at her as a human being.
