"While DNA-copying mechanisms are not absolutely accurate, they are precise enough to make the generation of variation a fairly slow process." What exactly does this line mean? Why does the generation of variation need to be a slow process? Please help.

This line means that while DNA copying, the process is not accurate and their are some variations. These changes are very very small and cannot be seen in one or two generations. So it is a slow process and generation of variation occurs after a long time.
